Senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Francis Fadahunsi, has arrived at the Osun State Police Command headquarters in Osogbo for questioning over his controversial comments ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.
Fadahunsi arrived at the command headquarters at about 2:35 p.m. on Wednesday, following an invitation by the police authorities.
He was accompanied by the Commissioner of Police in charge of election security in Osun State, Samuel Etaifo Erale.
The senator’s invitation followed the circulation of a viral video in which he was allegedly heard calling on supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to “kill” members of the Accord Party.
The comments sparked widespread reactions, with several Nigerians and political stakeholders expressing concern over the possible impact of such statements on the conduct of the August 15 governorship election.
However, Fadahunsi has since clarified the controversial remark, insisting that he was referring to defeating the Accord Party at the ballot box and not encouraging physical violence.
In a statement issued by his media office, the senator described the comment as political and metaphorical, saying he was urging APC supporters to overwhelmingly reject the Accord Party through lawful and democratic means.
The police, however, summoned him to explain the circumstances surrounding the statement, which was allegedly made during an APC campaign programme in Ilesa.
The invitation was contained in a letter dated August 11 and signed by Erale. The police said the statement was considered threatening, inciting and intimidating and had already circulated widely on social media.
Fadahunsi’s appearance before the police comes just two days before the August 15 Osun State governorship election, amid heightened concerns over political tensions and possible violence.
Authorities have continued to urge political parties, candidates and their supporters to avoid inflammatory statements and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
