TERRORISTS ATTACK APC GOVERNORSHIP CANDIDATE’S CONVOY IN BORNO
Suspected Boko Haram terrorists have attacked the convoy of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Borno State, Mustapha Gubio, during a political tour in the northern part of the state.
The attack reportedly occurred on Thursday along the Kareto–Damasak highway as Gubio and his entourage travelled towards Mobbar Local Government Area for a thank-you visit to party supporters.
Sources said the convoy came under heavy attack around Kareto at about 2:30pm. The attackers reportedly used improvised explosive devices (IEDs), rocket-propelled grenades and firearms against the convoy.
Security personnel attached to the convoy, including soldiers, police officers, DSS personnel, NSCDC operatives, Civilian Joint Task Force members and vigilantes, reportedly responded to the attack and forced the terrorists to retreat into the surrounding bush.
A source who escaped the attack described the incident as terrifying, adding that several rocket-propelled grenades were fired at the convoy during the assault.
The source said some police armoured vehicles were damaged but claimed that no member of the convoy was killed.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Ani Iniedu, confirmed the incident, saying tactical police operatives countered the suspected terrorists and secured the affected route.
According to the police, security teams subsequently searched and cleared the area to detect and neutralise any secondary explosive threats.
The convoy, which was carrying the APC governorship candidate, government officials and other political stakeholders, was eventually evacuated to a secure location.
Authorities said no casualties were recorded among members of the entourage.
