World Suicide Prevention Day is observed annually on September 10 to raise awareness of suicide prevention and encourage communities worldwide to take action to save lives.
The 2026 observance marks the third and final year of the 2024–2026 triennial theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide,” accompanied by the call to action, “Start the Conversation.”
The campaign aims to promote open, compassionate conversations about suicide, challenge harmful misconceptions and reduce the stigma associated with suicidal thoughts and mental health challenges.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), suicide remains a significant public health concern, with more than 720,000 people dying by suicide globally each year. Each death has profound emotional, social and economic consequences for families, friends, workplaces and communities.

The 2026 campaign highlights the importance of fostering supportive environments in which people experiencing emotional distress can speak openly about their struggles and seek assistance without fear of judgment or discrimination.
In addition to encouraging individual conversations, the campaign calls for broader systemic action by urging governments and institutions to prioritise suicide prevention and mental health within public policy.
This includes developing and implementing evidence-based suicide prevention strategies, expanding access to high-quality mental health services and ensuring that people experiencing distress receive timely and appropriate support.

World Suicide Prevention Day was established in 2003 by the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP), in collaboration with the World Health Organization.
Observed annually on September 10, the day brings together governments, organisations, communities and individuals worldwide to promote suicide prevention and reaffirm the importance of supporting people who may be experiencing difficulties.
The 2026 campaign encourages everyone to start the conversation, listen with empathy and help build a society in which no one feels they must face emotional distress alone.
