The Ogun State Police Command has called on students to shun cultism, drug abuse, cybercrime, political thuggery and other forms of criminality capable of destroying their future.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Police Command, DSP Oluseyi Babasuyi, made the call while delivering a keynote address at the 45th Students Parliament Council (SPC) Summit 2026, organised by the Student Parliamentary Council of the Federal College of Education, Abeokuta.
The summit was held under the theme, “From Campus to Nation: Mobilising for Peace, Security and Development.”
Babasuyi described the theme as timely, stressing that educational institutions should serve not only as centres of academic learning but also as grounds where young people develop leadership skills, civic responsibility and positive values.
According to him, students have an important role to play in maintaining peace and security, noting that the responsibility for security does not rest solely on the Police or other security agencies.
“Security is a collective responsibility involving government, security agencies, communities, families and, most importantly, responsible citizens,” he said.
He urged students to stay away from cult groups, warning that involvement in cultism could expose young people to violence and other criminal activities that could jeopardise their education and future.
He explained that cultism often attracts young people through promises of protection, acceptance or a sense of belonging, but stressed that genuine strength comes from self-confidence, discipline, good character and the courage to stand on one’s own.
Babasuyi also urged students to be more responsible in their use of social media, especially in an era where information can spread within seconds.
He advised them to verify information before sharing it and avoid using digital platforms to circulate rumours, hate speech, inflammatory content or unverified claims that could create tension or threaten public peace.
Speaking on the 2027 general elections, the Ogun State Police spokesman encouraged young Nigerians to participate peacefully and responsibly in the democratic process.
He called on students to focus on issues, respect differing opinions and reject political violence and thuggery, stressing that the voice of the youth remains important in determining the country’s future.
Babasuyi assured the students that the Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, and the Ogun State Police Command, led by the Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, psc, FCSS, MNIPR, remains committed to protecting lives and property.
He said the Ogun State Police Command would continue to work towards creating a safe environment for learning, investment and development across Ogun State.
However, he noted that effective policing requires cooperation between security agencies and members of the public.
He encouraged students and other citizens to provide credible information to the Police whenever they notice suspicious activities, while also supporting lawful security initiatives in their communities.
Babasuyi urged the students to understand
that the future of Nigeria would be shaped by the choices they make today.
He said, “The nation you desire tomorrow begins with the choices you make today.”
He encouraged the students to carry the values of peace, responsibility, integrity and service beyond the classroom and into their communities and the wider society.
He expressed hope that the summit would inspire a new generation of young Nigerians who would not only demand a better country but also take responsibility for building it.
He concluded by wishing Ogun State and Nigeria continued peace and development.
