The Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) has honoured President Bola Ahmed Tinubu with its Shield Award in recognition of his administration’s efforts toward improving the welfare of Nigerian workers.
The award was presented on Monday as part of activities marking the union’s 114th anniversary. It was received on behalf of the President by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, at an event in Abuja.
The Shield Award is the union’s highest honour and is given to individuals it considers to have made significant contributions to the advancement of Nigerian workers.
The NCSU National President, Oluwole Sunday, described Tinubu as a strong supporter of Nigerian workers and said policies introduced by his administration had contributed to improved morale within the civil service.
Keyamo, who also received recognition from the union, highlighted several measures he said demonstrated the President’s attention to workers’ welfare.
He disclosed that the President had approved the release of N36 billion to former aviation workers, with the payment process reportedly at its final stage.
The minister also said a new salary structure had been approved for workers of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency after a long-standing dispute over salary relativity.
Keyamo further recalled that Tinubu signed a new minimum wage into law in 2024 and reduced the statutory period for reviewing the minimum wage from five years to three years.
He said negotiations for another minimum wage review are expected to begin in 2027 in line with the new three-year review cycle.
The minister also stressed the importance of continuing efforts to improve workers’ welfare, saying the issue remains an ongoing responsibility.
