President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the acquisition of five additional helicopters for the Nigerian Air Force as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s security operations and improve its response to rising insecurity.
The approval is expected to boost the military’s operational capacity, particularly in tackling insurgency, banditry and other security threats affecting different parts of the country.

The planned acquisition forms part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to improve the equipment available to the armed forces and enhance their ability to conduct surveillance, transport personnel and carry out missions in difficult terrain.
The additional helicopters are expected to support ongoing military operations by improving mobility and providing greater flexibility during security engagements. Their deployment could also help the Air Force respond more effectively to emergencies and coordinate operations with other security agencies.

Nigeria has continued to face security challenges, including terrorist attacks in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest and other forms of violent crime across several regions.
The Federal Government has repeatedly emphasised the need to strengthen the military through improved equipment, modern technology and better operational capabilities.

The acquisition of the five helicopters is expected to complement existing efforts to modernise the Nigerian Air Force and improve its contribution to national security.
Further details regarding the helicopter models, procurement costs and delivery schedule will be important in determining when the new aircraft will become operational.
