FOOTBALLER DIES IN LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY CRASH (VIDEO)

A footballer has lost his life in a fatal road accident involving a Mercedes-Benz C300, a commercial bus and a trailer along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, November 2, 2026, around the Magboro axis of the expressway, within the Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area.

According to reports, the deceased was travelling with other members of his football academy as they headed to participate in a football match when the accident happened.

Officials of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), alongside police officers who arrived at the scene, confirmed the fatality and disclosed that a hit-and-run driver was involved.

HOW THE ACCIDENT HAPPENED

An eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, explained that members of the football academy were travelling in two separate vehicles when a trailer allegedly crossed from the opposite side of the road and struck the Mercedes-Benz.

The impact reportedly forced the Mercedes-Benz into a commercial bus, resulting in a multiple-vehicle collision.

According to the witness, only one person, who was inside the Mercedes-Benz, died in the accident, while the other occupants of the vehicle survived.

Passengers travelling in the commercial bus were also said to have escaped without injuries.

The eyewitness further alleged that the trailer driver immediately fled the scene with the vehicle without stopping to attend to the victims.

MERCEDES-BENZ BADLY DAMAGED

The Mercedes-Benz C300, bearing registration number SMK-878KX, was severely damaged in the collision.

Photographs and videos from the scene showed the extent of the destruction to the vehicle, while efforts were ongoing to remove the wreckage from the busy expressway and restore the free flow of traffic.

The footballer’s identity had not been officially disclosed as of the time of reporting.

AUTHORITIES CONFIRM FATALITY

Officials of TRACE and the Nigeria Police Force confirmed the death at the scene as investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident continued.

The reported involvement of a trailer whose driver allegedly escaped has raised further concerns about accountability and road safety on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The incident has also highlighted the risks faced by motorists and passengers travelling along the busy highway, particularly when heavy-duty vehicles are involved.

As of the time of filing this report, no official announcement had been made regarding the arrest or identification of the suspected fleeing trailer driver.
