The Department of State Services (DSS) on Wednesday held a special gathering in Abuja to celebrate one year of transformative leadership under its Director-General, Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, MON, whose appointment on August 28, 2024, has been described as a turning point for the nation’s foremost intelligence agency.
The ceremony, attended by the Deputy Director-General Administration (DDGA), Assistant Directors-General (ADGs), senior officers, and rank-and-file operatives, provided a platform to reflect on the DG’s achievements, his leadership philosophy, and his lasting impact on Nigeria’s security landscape.
A Patriot and Visionary Leader
Mr. Ajayi’s career in the intelligence community spans over three decades, during which he has served with distinction across the length and breadth of Nigeria. From Bauchi to Enugu, Bayelsa to Rivers, Kogi to Abuja, he has consistently strengthened security frameworks, enhanced intelligence-gathering systems, and fostered safer communities.
His record as a strategist in crisis management remains a defining feature of his service. In Kogi State, his proactive measures led to the neutralization of terrorist cells, earning him official commendation from the state government. In Rivers and Bayelsa, his quiet but determined efforts helped stem militancy, while in Bauchi, his foresight in intelligence coordination played a pivotal role in containing violent extremism.
“These are not just lines in official records,” one senior officer remarked at the ceremony. “They are real-life legacies of peace that have touched ordinary Nigerians who can now live, trade, and thrive in safety.”
Champion of Capacity Building
Beyond security operations, Mr. Ajayi is recognized as a reformer with a strong focus on capacity building. Understanding that an institution is only as strong as its personnel, he has invested heavily in professional training, inter-agency collaboration, and technological innovation within the DSS.
Drawing from his exposure to strategic intelligence programs in the United States, United Kingdom, and Israel, he has infused global best practices into the Service while ensuring its methods remain attuned to Nigeria’s unique realities.
Under his leadership, DSS has intensified its role in safeguarding democracy, strengthening collaboration with sister security agencies, and driving intelligence-led operations that enhance national stability.
A Humble and Firm Leader
Colleagues describe Mr. Ajayi as a leader whose humility, integrity, and firmness stand out. He is regarded as a mentor to younger officers, a dependable commander to veterans, and a reassuring presence to Nigerians at large.
His leadership style has earned him widespread recognition from state governors, youth organizations, and regional leaders, who have praised him as a “silent achiever,” a “pillar of national stability,” and the “right man at the right time.”
Looking Ahead
As the DSS continues to strengthen its operational capabilities, the celebration of Mr. Ajayi’s first year in office was not only a tribute to his achievements but also a reaffirmation of the Service’s commitment to protecting the Nigerian state.
“Security is not only about strength of arms, but also about strength of mind, foresight, training, and values,” Mr. Ajayi was quoted as saying — a philosophy that has guided his reforms and inspired confidence within and beyond the agency.
The ceremony concluded with a standing ovation as officers and dignitaries hailed Mr. Ajayi for his exemplary service and prayed for his continued success in steering the DSS towards greater peace, unity, and stability for Nigeria.
Congratulations, Sir.
