Abia Reaping Benefits Of Subsidy Removal — Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has said that the removal of the petrol subsidy is yielding tangible benefits in Abia State and across Nigeria, allowing state governments to embark on vital development projects.

Tinubu, who was represented by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, made the remarks on Friday during a one-day working visit to Abia State.

The president reminded Nigerians of his inauguration day declaration on May 29, 2023 — “Subsidy is gone” — which brought an end to the country’s decades-long fuel subsidy. Although the decision attracted criticism from some quarters, with concerns about the lack of cushioning measures, Tinubu maintained that the policy is beginning to pay off.

Speaking at the commissioning of several projects, including the remodeled Dr. Michael Okpara Auditorium and completed road infrastructure, Umahi conveyed the president’s message:

“The removal of the fuel subsidy is driving development, and we are beginning to see its impact here in Abia State. Similar progress is being experienced across the country. I am committed to working with your governor to ensure Abia fully reclaims its potential.”

He further called on residents of the South-East to embrace unity and peace.

“I ask the people of the South-East to come together as one. As your brother, I have heard the messages directed to Mr. President and the remarks of the governor of Abia State,” Umahi said.

During the event, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, who represents Abia South, urged the federal government to release Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Governor Alex Otti echoed the call, assuring that dialogue with the presidency was ongoing.

“I can assure you that I am engaging with Mr President. He is positively disposed to it, and I believe that before long, Nnamdi Kanu will regain his freedom,” Otti stated.

Responding, Umahi explained that South-East leaders are working collectively with lawmakers and ministers to achieve a political resolution.

“I want to assure Senator Abaribe and Governor Otti that the governors of the South-East are committed to finding a political solution, alongside our senators, members of the House of Representatives, and ministers. With the president’s love for the South-East, a peaceful outcome is certain.

“But we must remain law-abiding, appreciative, and acknowledge that this president has placed the South-East at the centre of national activities.”
