The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State has strengthened its grassroots base and internal unity following the successful conduct of Local Government Congresses across the state’s 21 local government areas, as part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.
Most executives emerged through consensus arrangements, a move party leaders described as strategic for fostering cohesion and positioning the PDP as a strong contender in upcoming electoral contests.
Chairman of the PDP Local Government Congress Committee in Adamawa, David Iorhemba—a former Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly—commended members for their peaceful and orderly conduct during the exercise, which he monitored in Yola North, Yola South, and Girei LGAs.
He noted that the adoption of consensus candidates demonstrated the party’s democratic maturity and praised Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri for providing focused leadership that has stabilized and expanded the PDP’s grassroots reach.
“Governor Fintiri’s leadership has been instrumental in strengthening the party’s structure and enhancing its visibility across Adamawa,” Iorhemba said.
Other stakeholders, including members of the State House of Assembly and Girei LGA Congress Committee Chairman, Adamu Abubakar (Commissioner for Works and Energy), also lauded the exercise, describing it as transparent, smooth, and well-organized. They expressed optimism that the outcome had further united the PDP and positioned it to retain and reclaim political leadership in 2027.
The PDP Appeal Committee is expected to begin sittings on Sunday to address any petitions arising from the congresses. However, officials remain confident that the consensus-driven and peaceful process will minimize disputes.
With the ward and local government congresses concluded, focus now shifts to the forthcoming State Congress, which leaders believe will reflect the same inclusivity and transparency.
The successful congresses mark a significant step for the PDP in Adamawa as it works to consolidate grassroots support and present a united front ahead of the 2027 elections.
