Adelabu Declares ‘It’s My Turn’ for Oyo Governorship in 2027

Power Minister Bayo Adelabu has thrown his hat into the ring for the 2027 Oyo State governorship race, boldly declaring that after two tough losses, the time has come for him to take the helm.

Speaking at a recent gathering in Ibadan, the former Central Bank of Nigeria deputy governor echoed the now-famous “Èmi Lókàn” mantra—meaning “It’s my turn” in Yoruba—while reflecting on his political grind. “I contested in 2019 and 2023, so in 2027, Èmi Lókàn,” he said, adding that he’s learned the hard way that politics rewards patience, grit, and a bit of grace.

Adelabu, who ran as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in 2019 before switching to the Accord Party for the 2023 poll, both times facing off against Governor Seyi Makinde, insisted he’s earned his shot. “I’ve paid my dues. It’s been me and Governor Makinde in the race since 2019 and again in 2023. But come 2027, God has made it clear—it’s my turn. It’s Adelabu’s turn,” he told the crowd.

This isn’t his first signal of intent; he hinted at the ambition two months back, but Saturday’s remarks ramped up the call to action. With Makinde wrapping up his second term and barred by law from running again, the field is wide open. Adelabu, however, stressed that victory won’t come from solo heroics this time around. “This isn’t about pride or boasting; it’s about commitment and teamwork. We must all work together to make it happen. We’ve tried doing it alone before, and it didn’t work. This time, it must be a collective effort. Let’s start mobilizing and building the movement that will make 2027 a reality,” he urged supporters.

The declaration has the potential to shake up Oyo’s political scene, where Adelabu’s rivalry with Makinde has defined recent cycles. As the minister pushes for unity and grassroots hustle, eyes are on how his pitch lands amid the state’s shifting alliances.
