The Confederation of African Football has opened an investigation into alleged misconduct involving players and officials during the AFCON 2025 quarter-final matches between Nigeria and Algeria, and Morocco and Cameroon.
CAF confirmed that it has gathered match officials’ reports and reviewed video evidence pointing to possible unacceptable behaviour during and after the games. The cases have been referred to its Disciplinary Board, which will determine appropriate sanctions if any individuals are found culpable. The football body is also examining footage related to alleged misconduct by members of the media in the mixed zone.

Nigeria booked a place in the semi-finals with a 2–0 win over Algeria in Marrakech, courtesy of goals from Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams. However, the match ended amid tension as Algerian players confronted referees on the pitch.

The situation escalated into scuffles, while an attempted pitch invasion by fans was prevented by security personnel. The Algerian Football Federation has since submitted a formal complaint, citing controversial refereeing decisions, including a denied penalty appeal for an alleged handball.

In the other quarter-final, Morocco defeated Cameroon 2–0, but the match was similarly clouded by disputes over officiating. Cameroonian officials and players protested two penalty incidents involving Moroccan defender Adam Masina, both of which were waved away by the referee. Morocco’s head coach later rejected claims of officiating bias.

CAF reiterated its stance against misconduct, stressing that any behaviour directed at referees or match organisers that falls short of professional standards will not be tolerated. The governing body stated that firm action would be taken against anyone found to have violated its code of conduct.
