The Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, has criticized US President Donald Trump for claiming that Christians are being killed in Nigeria, describing the remark as false and capable of inciting tension.

Speaking at his palace after his 82nd birthday celebration, Akiolu said Trump’s comment misrepresents Nigeria’s reality and undermines its image. He emphasized that Nigerians of different faiths have coexisted peacefully for decades, sharing communities, celebrations, and challenges.
The monarch explained that insecurity in some parts of the country is driven by criminals, not religious motives, and urged global leaders to verify facts before making public statements. He also stressed the importance of unity during Nigeria’s current economic and security reforms.

Akiolu further called for Lagos to receive special federal recognition for its population size and central role in the nation’s economy, noting the city’s long-standing contribution as Nigeria’s economic hub.
