N868 FRAUD ALLEGATION: EX-ACCOUNTANT- GENERAL NWABUOKU IN COURT FEBRUARY 10TH FOR CROSS-EXAMINATION.

The Federal High Court in Maitama, Abuja, has scheduled February 10, 2026, for the cross-examination of Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, former Acting Accountant General of the Federation, in an alleged N868.4 million money laundering case.

Justice James Omotosho fixed the date on Monday, February 2, 2026, following the conclusion of Nwabuoku’s testimony in his defence.

The former acting AGF is facing a nine-count amended charge brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which alleges that he laundered N868,465,000 during his tenure in office.

During his testimony as the first defence witness (DW1), Nwabuoku, led by his counsel N. I. Quakers, SAN, denied any involvement in money laundering or fraud. He recounted his cooperation with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) during investigations, asserting that he provided statements to both agencies.

The former acting AGF urged the court to discharge and acquit him, insisting that the prosecution had failed to establish any wrongdoing.

Justice Omotosho adjourned proceedings to February 10 to allow the EFCC’s legal team to cross-examine Nwabuoku, including on statements he made during investigations and his handling of public funds. Nwabuoku remains on bail as the trial continues.

The case is part of a series of high-profile anti-corruption prosecutions involving senior public officials accused of financial misconduct. In November 2025, the same court dismissed a no-case submission filed by Nwabuoku, ruling that the EFCC had established a prima facie case warranting his defence.

The prosecution alleges that the offences occurred while Nwabuoku served as Director of Finance and Accounts at the Federal Ministry of Defence before his 2022 appointment as Acting Accountant-General of the Federation.

The upcoming cross-examination is expected to test the credibility of Nwabuoku’s account and the strength of his defence, marking a critical stage in the trial.
