The UK Foreign Office has updated its travel guidance for Turkey, one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations, warning British holidaymakers to remain vigilant about safety and health risks.
The advisory highlights that while millions of families travel to Turkey each year for its affordable resorts and vibrant cities, visitors should take precautions to protect themselves and their belongings.
According to Gov.uk, street robbery and pickpocketing remain common in Istanbul’s major tourist areas. Travellers are urged to keep personal items secure at all times.
The Foreign Office also used its official X account to remind travellers to carry essential documents in hard copy:
“Take a paper copy of your insurance policy with you when you travel. If you lose your phone abroad, a paper copy will have your policy number and insurer’s emergency 24-hour telephone number.”
In addition to theft risks, the advisory warns against the consumption of locally produced or counterfeit alcohol. Cases of spiking and methanol poisoning have been reported in Ankara, Istanbul, and other parts of Turkey, leading to deaths and severe illness.
The Foreign Office cautions tourists to avoid home-brewed spirits and counterfeit branded alcohol and recommends seeking guidance from tour operators or local authorities if in doubt.
Officials stress that preparing ahead of time, securing belongings, and keeping travel documents safe can help ensure a smooth and stress-free holiday experience in Turkey.
