Troops of the Nigerian Army’s 8 Division have thwarted an attempted ambush by suspected terrorists aimed at the convoy of the General Officer Commanding, Major General Bemgha Koughna, near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.

The incident happened as the senior military officer, who also oversees Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, was travelling to inspect frontline troops deployed for ongoing counter-terrorism efforts in the North-West.
The convoy reportedly came under intense gunfire while passing through a forested and volatile area. Soldiers escorting the GOC responded swiftly with coordinated firepower, forcing the attackers to retreat and neutralising five of the assailants. The prompt response ensured the safety of the convoy and disrupted the terrorists’ plans in the area.

After the clash, troops carried out a detailed sweep of the surroundings, recovering several weapons and items believed to have been abandoned by the fleeing attackers. Recovered materials included an OJC gun, a PKT machine gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, ammunition of various calibres, a cash sum of ₦840,000 found in a camel bag, two mobile phones, and five motorcycles.

The Army stated that soldiers remain active in the area to maintain control and prevent further attacks, as operations continue against terrorist groups threatening communities across the North-West. The military also reiterated its resolve to protect civilians and sustain pressure on armed groups within its operational zone.
