Nigerian Army Cracks Down on Arms Sales, Drug Abuse Among Officers

The Nigerian Army has issued a stern warning to its personnel, cautioning that anyone involved in the sale of arms and ammunition will face severe consequences.

The announcement came from Major General M.A. Etsu Ndagi, Chief of Civil Military Affairs at Army Headquarters, during a Human Rights and Professional Conduct workshop for troops of the 17 Brigade and Sector 2 Joint Taskforce Northwest Operation.

“Engaging in the sale of weapons and ammunition will worsen the country’s security challenges,” Major General Ndagi stated. “These weapons can claim innocent lives, and officers themselves may fall prey to criminal elements. The Nigerian Army will not hesitate to act decisively against anyone caught in this unlawful activity.”

He also condemned the misuse of drugs and other psychoactive substances by some soldiers, warning that such conduct undermines national security. “The service has zero tolerance for this behavior and will enforce strict measures against offenders,” he added.

Major General Ndagi praised the troops for their resilience in fighting banditry and terrorism, highlighting the dangers of operations where insurgents and civilians often intermingle. “These missions are complex, and while courage and tactical skill are essential, operations must always respect the law,” he said.

He emphasized that adherence to human rights is a core part of the Army’s strategy, reinforcing credibility and legitimacy. “Discipline and ethical conduct are non-negotiable. The Department of Civil Military Affairs also receives complaints related to spouse and child abandonment, which can threaten national security. Participate fully in this workshop to benefit from it,” he advised.

Earlier, Brigadier General Maikarfi Ibrahim, Commander of the 17 Brigade in Katsina, urged officers to use the workshop to clarify any questions about proper conduct in the field. “This event is crucial because the Nigerian Army operates nationwide. Experts were carefully selected, and parts of the program focus on family cohesion. It’s a rare opportunity as this is an annual workshop,” he said.

The session, hosted at the Brigade Officers’ Mess, Natsinta Barracks, Katsina, welcomed senior officers from both serving and retired ranks, along with resource personnel from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
