AT LAST, LAGOS BANS INSTALLATION OF EZE NDIGBO, SERIKI, THREATENS ARREST.

The Lagos State Government has issued a stern warning against the assumption of chieftaincy titles without official approval, stating that violators will face arrest and prosecution under the Obas and Chiefs Law of Lagos State 2015.

In a statement signed by Mr. Bolaji Kayode Robert, Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, the government described the emergence of self-proclaimed traditional rulers as “an unhealthy development” that has caused tension, confusion, and unnecessary crises.

The statement clarified that titles such as “Oba,” “His Royal Majesty,” or “His Royal Highness” assumed without government sanction are illegal. “The preponderance of these self-acclaimed chieftaincy titles has reached an alarming level, undermining efforts to maintain order and tradition,” it said.

The government emphasised that only the Governor, acting through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, is authorised to approve chieftaincy titles in Lagos State. Sections 15–20 of the 2015 law outline the proper procedures for filling vacancies and granting titles.

The statement further highlighted that Section 21 and Section 23 of the law prohibit the use of royal insignia—including beaded crowns, shoes, staffs, and horse whisks (irukere)—by anyone not officially recognised. Offenders risk up to two years’ imprisonment. “Such actions will be considered a deliberate violation and affront to the traditional institutions of the State,” the statement added.

Individuals currently holding unauthorised titles were urged to desist immediately. Residents are also encouraged to report any unlawful conferment of chieftaincy titles to the Ministry or security agencies for prompt action.

Commissioner Robert said the directive aims to “protect and uphold the sanctity and integrity of the traditional institution in the State and preserve our most cherished culture and tradition from disrepute.”
