Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, alongside other notable political figures including Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, Aminu Tambuwal, and Nasir El-Rufai, has thrown his support behind the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the preferred platform for the opposition coalition seeking to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Following the announcement of the coalition, speculations emerged suggesting that Atiku and other northern politicians were being pressured to support a southern presidential candidate. However, Atiku’s media office has firmly dismissed these claims, branding them as “desperate falsehoods.”
In a strongly worded statement, his media team clarified:
“In response to recent inquiries from journalists and concerned Nigerians about an alleged meeting where His Excellency Atiku Abubakar supposedly declined to step down for a southern candidate, we categorically deny such claims. Atiku Abubakar was not present at any such meeting. The story is entirely fabricated—nothing more than propaganda manufactured by the Tinubu-led APC administration. It is not only false but also laughably desperate.”
The statement went on to describe the report as a “diversionary tactic” aimed at sowing discord within the opposition ranks and derailing the momentum generated by the coalition’s adoption of the ADC.
“Let it be clear: no amount of misinformation or anonymous briefings can break the unity and resolve of the opposition. We remain committed to rescuing Nigeria from a floundering and rudderless government,” the statement added.
The release concluded by urging the public and media outlets to disregard the circulating reports, calling them baseless, unverified, and lacking in credibility.
