The Democracy Watch Initiative (DWI) has criticized former Vice President Atiku Abubakar for advocating the unconditional release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), warning that his stance could undermine confidence in the rule of law and judicial processes.

In a statement on October 16, 2025, DWI’s Director of Strategic Communication, Dr. Tunji Bamidele, argued that Atiku’s call risks sending a message that disregards accountability, given Kanu’s ongoing trial for serious charges like terrorism and treasonable felony.

Bamidele urged Atiku to reconsider his position to preserve national unity and respect for legal institutions, noting that politicizing justice could erode public trust. The DWI emphasized the need for issue-based discussions focused on due process, peace, and reconciliation, rather than politicizing sensitive legal matters. The group called for all Nigerians to uphold the principle that justice must apply equally to ensure long-term stability.
