AU APPLAUDS CONDUCT OF UGANDA ELECTION, CONGRATULATES MUSEVENI ON SEVENTH-TERM VICTORY

The African Union Commission (AUC) has praised the conduct of Uganda’s presidential election held on January 15, 2026, and congratulated President Yoweri Museveni on his re-election.

According to official results, Museveni, who has led Uganda since 1986, won a commanding 71.65 percent of the votes, securing a seventh term in office. His main challenger, Bobi Wine, garnered 24.72 percent of the vote.

In a statement, AUC Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf commended the electoral process and noted that Museveni achieved 71.61 percent of votes cast.

“The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, commends the conduct of the elections in Uganda and congratulates H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on his re-election with 71.61% of the votes cast during the presidential elections held on 15 January 2026,” the statement read.

Youssouf also reaffirmed the AUC’s commitment to supporting democracy and effective governance across Africa, while applauding Ugandans for their dedication to consolidating democratic gains, maintaining peace, security, and fostering development.

The AUC chair further acknowledged former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan for his leadership of the joint African Union, COMESA, and IGAD Election Observation Mission to Uganda, describing his contribution as “sterling leadership” during the observation exercise.

Through the statement, the African Union Commission emphasized its ongoing efforts to promote democratic processes and good governance throughout the continent.
