AU COUNCIL MEETING ADDIS ABABA : TUGGAR LEADS NIGERIAN DELEGATION.

Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to lead the country’s delegation to the 48th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU).

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the high-level meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, and Thursday, February 12, 2026, at the AU Headquarters. Tuggar’s participation reflects Nigeria’s continued commitment to promoting continental unity, peace, and sustainable development.

 

The minister arrived in Addis Ababa on Monday, February 9, where he was welcomed by Ethiopia’s State Minister of Foreign Affairs, Berhanu Tsegaye, alongside Nigeria’s Chargé d’Affaires in Ethiopia, Ambassador Nasir Aminu, and officials from the Nigerian Mission.

During the Executive Council session, the Nigerian delegation will engage in ministerial meetings, policy dialogues, side events, and bilateral discussions aimed at advancing shared African priorities. Key areas include peace and security, democratic governance, economic integration, institutional resilience, and sustainable development.

The Executive Council meetings precede the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled for February 14 to 15, 2026. Nigeria’s participation will focus on issues such as development financing, health security, climate resilience, and the implementation of the AU’s Agenda 2063.

On the sidelines, Minister Tuggar will hold bilateral meetings with counterparts from across Africa and beyond to strengthen diplomatic ties and advance Nigeria’s strategic interests. The country will also host and participate in selected high-level side events, including a Nigerian-led forum on regional partnerships for democracy, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to democratic norms and institutional strengthening across Africa.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has promised to provide updates on key outcomes and deliberations as the meetings progress.
