Barcelona executed a strong comeback on Tuesday to defeat Atletico Madrid 3-1, moving four points clear at the top of La Liga. The victory provided a vital boost for Flick’s side against a title rival, following a recent Champions League thrashing and shaky league form.
Despite the absences of Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong, Barcelona faced a tense start. Atletico took the lead when Alex Baena broke through the high defensive line and scored, a goal confirmed by VAR.
The Comeback
Barcelona responded quickly. In the 26th minute, the recently recovered Raphinha leveled the score, taking the ball around Jan Oblak and sliding it into the net.
The champions had a chance to lead before halftime but Robert Lewandowski missed a penalty, blazing the ball high and wide. Oblak then denied him moments later with a brilliant save on a header.
In the second half,
Dani Olmo put Barcelona ahead with a slick finish after receiving a pass from Lewandowski. Unfortunately, Olmo sustained a shoulder injury while scoring and had to be substituted. Playmaker Pedri also went down hurt later in the half, raising concerns for the upcoming Champions League match.
Atletico struggled to equalize, with substitute Thiago Almada missing their best chance. In stoppage time, Ferran Torres secured the 3-1 win after being set up by Alejandro Balde, dealing a blow to Atletico’s title ambitions.
League Standings
The win gives Barcelona a four-point cushion at the top. Real Madrid (second) visits Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday, aiming to peg them back, while Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid remains six points behind in fourth place.
