Bauchi Creates 29 New Local Governments, Awaits National Assembly Approval

The Bauchi State Government has enacted a new law establishing 29 additional local government areas (LGAs), bringing the total to 49 pending National Assembly ratification.

Governor Bala Mohammed signed the legislation on October 28, 2025, while the Acting Deputy Clerk of the House, Musa Yerima, forwarded the law to the National Assembly’s Constitution Review Committee for approval.

Bauchi currently has 20 LGAs recognized by the 1999 Constitution. Yerima explained in his letter to Senator Barau Jibrin, Chairman of the Committee, that the new LGAs will remain “inchoate” until the National Assembly amends the Constitution to reflect their names, as required by Section 8(5).

He added that the law was passed in line with Section 100(3) of the Constitution.

If approved, Bauchi’s move will increase Nigeria’s total number of local governments from 774 to 793, reflecting efforts to bring governance closer to the people in a state of about 10 million residents.
