On October 17, 2025, the Bauchi State Police Command arrested 30-year-old Mamuda Zakari Yau, alias Wadata, for allegedly stabbing and killing 25-year-old commercial motorcyclist Basiru Mohammed to steal his motorcycle in a bid to raise funds for marriage. According to a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Ahmed Wakil, the incident occurred on Thursday in the Zango Sa’idawa area of Bauchi.
Yau, a petty trader, reportedly lured Mohammed, stabbed him with a knife, and fled with his red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle (registration NNG 813 UM). Mohammed’s cries for help alerted residents, who chased Yau, forcing him to abandon the bike and escape. Police from the ‘E’ Division in Yelwa responded, rushing Mohammed to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Using intelligence from Yau’s recovered phone, police tracked and arrested him. Yau confessed to the crime, citing financial desperation to marry a third wife. Recovered items include the motorcycle, a blood-stained knife, shoes, and an Android phone. The police stated that Yau will face court charges upon completion of the investigation.
