BAYELSA ASSEMBLY CONFIRMS PASTOR PETER AKPE AS NEW DEPUTY GOVERNOR TWO MONTHS AFTER EWHREUDJAKPO’S DEATH

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has formally confirmed the appointment of Pastor Peter Akpe as the state’s new Deputy Governor.

The confirmation took place during a plenary session on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, in Yenagoa.

Pastor Akpe, who previously served as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri, was nominated following the death of the former Deputy Governor, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, who passed away in December 2025.

An ordained clergyman of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Akpe brings a diverse background spanning civil service and politics.

He worked in the civil services of Rivers and Bayelsa states before fully transitioning into politics.

Akpe was a two-term member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly from 2011 to 2019, serving as Majority Leader throughout his tenure.

He also held the position of Commissioner between 2008 and 2011 under the administration of former Governor Seriake Dickson.

With the assembly’s approval now secured, Pastor Akpe is cleared for swearing-in as Deputy Governor.

The confirmation ends a two-month vacancy in the office and strengthens the executive arm ahead of key governance and developmental activities in the state.
