Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has dissolved the State Executive Council (SEC), effectively relieving all commissioners and the Chief of Staff of their positions.
The announcement was made through a statement issued on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula.
According to the statement, the governor informed members of the SEC about the dissolution at the conclusion of the council’s 12th meeting for the year. However, he has immediately appointed the former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Barrister Moses Atagher, as the new Chief of Staff.
Describing Atagher as a “seasoned administrator,” the statement noted that he previously served as the acting Managing Director of the Federal Mortgage Bank.
Governor Alia expressed appreciation to the outgoing commissioners for their service over the past two years. He encouraged those who may not be reappointed to remain loyal to the party and stay engaged with governance processes, emphasizing that their exit opens opportunities for others to contribute to the state’s development.
The governor clarified that the dissolution applies only to the commissioners, excluding the newly appointed Chief of Staff.
Speaking on behalf of the former commissioners, Bemsen Mnyim thanked the governor for the opportunity to serve. “At every stage in life, everywhere you are called to serve is a school. We have learnt a lot while working with you,” he said.
All outgoing commissioners have been instructed to hand over their responsibilities to the Permanent Secretaries of their respective ministries without delay.
