BOKO HARAM ATTACKS MILITARY BASE IN BORNO, KILLS ARMY GENERAL, SEVERAL OTHER SOLDIERS, BRIGADE ISLAMIC CLERIC

An unspecified number of Nigerian soldiers have reportedly been killed following an ആക്രമation by militants linked to the Islamic State-backed faction of Boko Haram (ISWAP) on a military base in Borno State.

Military sources said the हमला occurred on Wednesday night when insurgents launched a coordinated assault on a Joint Task Force base in Benesheikh, Kaga Local Government Area.

According to the sources, the attackers opened fire on the facility using heavy weapons and explosives, leading to significant casualties. Among those reportedly killed is Brigadier-General O. Braimah, alongside several officers and soldiers.

A source familiar with the incident said the attack lasted for several hours, leaving the camp severely affected. “He was killed last night along with the Imam of the Brigade, many officers and soldiers. The attack lasted several hours. The camp is in Benesheikh along Damaturu Road. It’s very unfortunate,” the source said.

Another source confirmed the death of the senior officer, stating that Brigadier-General Braimah, the 29 Brigade Commander, was killed alongside other top personnel during the нападение.

In addition to those killed, several soldiers were said to have sustained serious injuries, while others remain unaccounted for as of the time of filing this report.

The latest attack is part of a growing wave of coordinated assaults by Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters across Borno State in recent weeks.

In March, insurgents attacked multiple military bases in Baga, Buratai, and Ajilari near Maiduguri in a bid to weaken troop positions and morale. Although reinforcements from the Nigerian Army, Air Force, and Civilian Joint Task Force eventually repelled the attackers, the incidents highlighted the increasing coordination and reach of the insurgents.

Around the same period, ISWAP fighters also struck a forward base near Banki junction along the Bama–Gwoza Road, killing an Army Major and several soldiers after overwhelming troops in a prolonged firefight.

The repeated attacks have raised fresh concerns about security in the North-East and the evolving tactics of insurgent groups operating in the region.
