Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the immediate dissolution of the State Executive Council.

The decision, announced Monday by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani, is intended to allow members of the council who wish to contest in the upcoming general elections to do so without restrictions. Governor Zulum has directed all commissioners to hand over their ministries’ affairs to the Permanent Secretaries by Friday, April 3, 2026. He also thanked the outgoing commissioners for their service and contributions to the development of Borno State.

The move comes just a day before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s deadline for political appointees under his administration to resign if they intend to contest in the 2027 elections. The presidential directive, outlined in a circular from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, affects ministers, special advisers, senior special assistants, directors-general, and other political appointees across federal agencies, parastatals, and government-owned companies.

The circular, in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, requires all affected officials to submit formal resignation letters by March 31, 2026. This step ensures compliance with Nigerian electoral laws, prevents abuse of office, and maintains fairness in the political process ahead of party primaries for the 2027 elections.
