Borussia Dortmund need quality, courage and luck to challenge Bayern Munich — CEO

BundesligaBad Ragaz (Switzerland), July 22, 2022 Borussia Dortmund chief executive officer (CEO) Hans-Joachim Watzke says Bayern Munich are Bundesliga top favourites again after some big-name signings.

However, he is still hopeful that his side or someone else can finally dethrone the 10-time reigning champions, pledging that his club will also try to mount another serious challenge.

Watzke, at their pre-season camp in Switzerland, insisted that 10-time reigning champions Bayern Munich have not really lost any quality with the sale of Robert Lewandowski.

He said this was because they managed to sign forward Sadio Mane and defender Matthijs de Ligt as part of a 120 million euros (122 million dollars) spending spree.

“Bayern Munich are the number one top favourites with these signings,” Watzke said.

“You have to be able to afford what Bayern Munich have done in terms of transfers so far.

But that’s nothing new.

“This will not turn the financial power of the Bundesliga upside down, but will further cement it.

“RB Leipzig, Bayer Leverkusen, we —- of course we will all like to see Bayern Munich not become champions.

But you can’t necessarily have the German public demand that from us.

“At some point in a season we have to have the quality, the courage and the luck to strike again.

Then Bayern Munich will still have to help us or RB Leipzig or Bayer Leverkusen or whoever.

“But then it will happen at some point that another club will become champion.”
Borussia Dortmund last won the title in 2011 and 2012 and hope to challenge again after another runners-up spot in the past season.

They have also invested big in the likes of German internationals Nico Schlotterbeck, Niklas Süle and Karim Adeyemi.

But, owing to the sale of Erling Haaland to Manchester City, Watzke said they have only spent 15 million euros more than they generated.

Another new signing, striker Sebastien Haller, has been diagnosed with a testicular tumour and Watzke said the season start could be “a bit bumpy”.

“But this must be seen as a challenge.”
Watzke said he has high hopes in Edin Terzic, now the head coach after a reign as interim helmsman in 20202021 with the German Cup title.

“What makes me optimistic is his high professional qualification.

On top of that, Edin has really delved into life as a coach and as a member of Borussia Dortmund.

“Edin knows every detail of the club,” Watzke
