According to his family, Foreman died peacefully on Friday night at a hospital in Houston, surrounded by loved ones. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, his family honored his remarkable legacy and requested privacy as they mourn the loss of the former Olympic gold medalist, who later became an ordained preacher and founded the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Texas.
“Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr., who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025, surrounded by loved ones,” the statement read. “A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great-grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.
“A humanitarian, an Olympian, and a two-time heavyweight champion of the world, he was deeply respected—a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name for his family.
“We are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers and kindly ask for privacy as we honor the extraordinary life of a man we were blessed to call our own.”
Foreman’s storied career saw him claim the heavyweight championship twice and win Olympic gold in 1968. He is best remembered for his legendary 1974 fight against Muhammad Ali, the Rumble in the Jungle. Although he lost that bout, he went on to secure 76 victories in 81 fights, with an astonishing 68 knockouts.
In 1994, at the age of 45, Foreman made history by becoming the oldest heavyweight champion, a record that still stands. He officially retired from boxing in 1997.
Beyond boxing, Foreman found success as an entrepreneur, most notably with the George Foreman Grill, which became a household name. He was also known for his philanthropic work and dedication to his faith.
Foreman was married five times and is survived by his 12 children. His passing marks the end of an era for the boxing world, but his legacy as a champion, preacher, and humanitarian will endure.
