The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has formally endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term in the 2027 general elections. The endorsement, met with chants of “No vacancy at Aso Rock,” signals the ruling party’s firm backing of Tinubu’s leadership and policy direction.
However, the meeting was marked by the conspicuous absence of key APC figures, including former President Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, and former governors Rotimi Amaechi, Nasir El-Rufai, and Kayode Fayemi. Despite this, the gathering saw the presence of influential party stakeholders, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Abbas Tajudeen, as well as several APC governors and ministers.
Vote of Confidence in Tinubu
A pivotal moment of the meeting came when Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma moved a motion for a vote of confidence in President Tinubu, which was seconded by former Edo State Governor and Senator Adams Oshiomhole.
In his remarks, Tinubu expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from party leaders and reiterated his administration’s commitment to economic reforms, security improvements, and stabilizing food prices. He also called for the formation of reconciliation committees to address grievances within the party, emphasizing the need for unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
APC’s Financial and Structural Challenges
APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, disclosed that the party inherited N8.987 billion in legal liabilities from election-related litigations. He also highlighted the urgent need for a new national secretariat to accommodate party officers and facilitate operations at the newly established Progressive Institute.
Furthermore, Ganduje announced the defection of notable opposition figures, including former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, as part of the APC’s ongoing membership expansion drive.
Political Implications
The NEC’s endorsement of Tinubu cements his position as the party’s undisputed leader heading into the next electoral cycle. With APC heavyweights aligning behind his second-term bid, the ruling party is reinforcing its internal structures in preparation for what is expected to be a fiercely contested 2027 election.
This development marks a crucial phase in Nigeria’s political landscape, setting the stage for the next chapter in the country’s democratic journey.
