BREAKING: Atiku Abubakar Resigns from PDP

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has officially resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), marking a significant shift in Nigeria’s political landscape.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the PDP Chairman of his ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State, Atiku cited a departure from the party’s founding ideals as the reason for his exit.

“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” Atiku stated.

He expressed appreciation for the opportunities he received within the party, including serving two terms as Vice President and emerging as the PDP’s presidential candidate in the 2019 and 2023 elections.

“Serving in such roles has been one of the most meaningful chapters of my life,” he wrote. “However, I believe the PDP has strayed from the core principles on which it was founded. This divergence has made it difficult for me to remain a part of the party.”

“It is with a heavy heart that I make this decision, but the differences are now irreconcilable,” the letter continued. “I wish the PDP and its leadership all the best going forward.”

Atiku, a founding member of the PDP, has recently been at the forefront of efforts to unify opposition forces. He played a leading role in the coalition that recently adopted the Action Democratic Congress (ADC) as its platform to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.

His resignation signals a potential realignment ahead of the next election cycle, with implications for both the PDP and the broader opposition movement.
