The Federal High Court in Abuja has removed Rep. Abubakar Gummi from the House of Representatives for defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Justice Obiora Egwuatu ruled that Gummi’s defection was unconstitutional and ordered him to vacate his Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency seat. The court also barred Speaker Tajudeen Abbas from recognising him and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a new election within 30 days.
The judge further ordered Gummi to refund all salaries and allowances received since his defection in October 2024 and to submit proof of payment within 30 days. He also awarded ₦500,000 in costs against Gummi, stressing that “political prostitution must not be rewarded.”
