The Nigeria Customs Service has introduced a mandatory drug-testing policy for all new recruits and serving officers.

Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi announced the measure at the close of the 2025 CGC Conference in Abuja, describing it as vital to achieving a “fully drug-free institution.”
The policy will begin with the ongoing recruitment exercise and expand to all Customs zones, commands, and headquarters staff. According to Adeniyi, the decision follows incidents in which erratic behaviour and poor judgment among personnel were linked to substance abuse.
“The Service will no longer tolerate situations where officers make sensitive decisions while under the influence of drugs,” he said, stressing that sound judgment is essential for those responsible for border security and revenue collection. “There will be no compromise.”
The initiative supports a wider call by anti-narcotics agencies for security organisations to adopt routine drug testing to strengthen discipline and rebuild public trust, especially as concerns grow over the conduct of some uniformed officers when dealing with civilians.
