Operatives of the Department of State Security (DSS) and the Nigeria Police have taken over the Lagos State House of Assembly, sealing the offices of Speaker Mojisola Meranda, her deputy, and the clerk.
According to reports, heavily armed security personnel arrived at the Assembly complex in Alausa, Ikeja, early Monday morning, conducting thorough searches on passersby and restricting movement in the area.
The development follows the ongoing legal battle involving former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, who was removed from office by 32 out of the 40 Assembly members on January 13, 2025, while he was in the United States. Describing his removal as a “coup,” President Bola Tinubu and other political figures have expressed divided opinions on the matter.
Obasa has since filed a lawsuit at the Ikeja High Court, challenging the legality of his removal and seeking an accelerated hearing. His case has further deepened political tensions within the All Progressives Congress (APC), with the party’s Governance Advisory Council (GAC) reportedly split over his fate.
As security operatives maintain their presence at the Assembly, uncertainty looms over the leadership crisis and its implications for governance in Lagos State.
