The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has granted administrative bail to popular social commentator, Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan.
Otse was arrested by EFCC operatives on Friday, May 2, 2025, a development that sparked widespread public outcry and demands for his immediate release. Many Nigerians took to social media, questioning the circumstances surrounding his arrest and demanding transparency from the Commission.
In a statement issued on Tuesday morning, the EFCC confirmed that Otse was taken into custody following multiple petitions alleging various forms of financial misconduct. The agency also stated that Otse had ignored several invitations sent to him via known addresses and communication channels.
The statement reads in part:
“The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, in the exercise of its mandate to combat economic and financial crimes, invited Martins Vincent Otse in connection with a series of petitions involving serious allegations of financial malfeasance. Despite repeated invitations, he failed to appear before the Commission.”
The EFCC clarified that Otse’s arrest was not motivated by his outspoken criticism of the agency, which it described as “unguided attacks.” It noted that any concerns regarding those remarks would be addressed by the appropriate authorities separately.
The Commission further explained that a valid remand order was obtained to detain Otse, but he has now been granted administrative bail pending the fulfillment of all conditions.
“The EFCC has a lawful right to detain any suspect under investigation. Mr. Otse has been offered administrative bail and will be released once he meets the stipulated requirements,” the statement added.
The Commission also urged Nigerians to allow it to carry out its duties without interference, assuring the public that any charges will be filed once investigations are concluded.
“While we appreciate public interest in our operations, speculations regarding our motives are unnecessary. The EFCC must be allowed to carry out its responsibilities without fear or favour.”
