#BREAKING: FG to Shut Down Marina Bridge for 60 Days for Emergency Repairs

The Federal Government has announced the temporary closure of the iconic Marina Bridge in Lagos for a period of 60 days, starting from Monday, April 29, 2025, to allow for critical repair and maintenance work.

This announcement was made by the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing in a statement issued on Friday, citing structural safety concerns following recent inspections conducted by a joint team of engineers from the Federal Highway Department and Lagos State traffic authorities.

According to the Ministry, the bridge, which connects key commercial and administrative zones in Lagos Island with other parts of the metropolis, has developed “noticeable structural fatigue” due to age, vibration, and increased vehicular load over the years. Built over five decades ago, the Marina Bridge serves as a vital link for thousands of daily commuters and cargo operators.

Minister of Works, Sen. David Umahi, said:

“This temporary closure is a preventive action to avert a major structural failure. We understand the inconvenience this will cause, but safety must come first. The work is time-bound and will be executed with urgency.”

Traffic Advisory Issued

In collaboration with the Lagos State Government, a detailed traffic diversion plan has been rolled out. Alternative routes include Ebute Ero Bridge, Carter Bridge, and the newly rehabilitated Eko Bridge. Traffic marshals will be deployed to ensure order and prevent gridlock.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Seun Osiyemi, called on road users to cooperate with authorities:

“This is a sacrifice for a safer tomorrow. We urge residents and transport operators to plan their journeys accordingly.”

Economic Implications and Reactions

The closure is expected to have a temporary impact on businesses and logistics operations around Lagos Island, including the Marina financial district, CMS market, and adjoining corridors. The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has called for swift execution and efficient management to minimize economic disruptions.

This is the second major bridge maintenance exercise in Lagos this year, following the partial shutdown of Third Mainland Bridge earlier in March for expansion joint repairs.

Authorities have promised daily progress reports and community engagement throughout the project period.
