BREAKING: Heavily Armed Fulani Herdsmen Launch Deadly Attack on Benue Capital

Makurdi, the Benue State capital, was thrown into chaos early Tuesday as suspected armed Fulani herdsmen launched a deadly attack on Mtsewnem, Akondutyough village in the North Bank area.

According to NaijaOnPoint Nigeria, the assault occurred around 3:00 a.m. while residents were asleep. Multiple fatalities have been reported, with several others injured in what is being described as a brutal and unprovoked assault.

Eyewitnesses say the attackers stormed the community in large numbers, targeting homes and leaving a trail of destruction and fear.

Reacting to the incident, humanitarian activist and human rights advocate Ukan Kurugh called the attack “deeply disturbing” and condemned the continued insecurity in the state.

“At 3:00 a.m. today, I received a heartbreaking distress call, along with chilling videos and photos from the scene,” Kurugh wrote. “This attack happened in North Bank—less than 40 minutes from Makurdi town. These assailants strike with impunity, untouched by state or federal forces. They have defied the President, the Governor, and our entire security structure.”

He added, “My heart breaks for the victims and their families. We will not remain silent. We will keep demanding justice and protection.”

As of the time of filing this report, attempts to contact the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Edet Udeme, have been unsuccessful.

The attack adds to the growing list of violent incidents in Benue State linked to suspected herdsmen, raising urgent questions about the effectiveness of existing security measures in safeguarding lives and property.
