BREAKING: INEC to conduct by-elections August 16 in Oyo, Ogun and others

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled by-elections across affected constituencies for Saturday, August 16, 2025.

This was made known by the INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, during a consultative meeting with political party representatives held in Abuja on Thursday. The by-elections are intended to fill vacant positions in both the National and State Assemblies. These vacancies arose due to a combination of factors, including resignations, deaths, and court nullifications. Among the constituencies where elections will be conducted are Ibadan North Federal Constituency in Oyo State, Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, Isa/Sabon Birni in Sokoto State, Garki/Babura in Jigawa State, and Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State.

The Ibadan North seat became vacant following the death of Hon. Musliudeen Olaide Akinremi, who was representing the constituency under the All Progressives Congress (APC). Akinremi, serving his second term, passed away at the age of 51 on July 10, 2024, and was buried the following day according to Islamic rites.

In Ogun State, the Ikenne/Shagamu/Remo North seat became vacant after the death of Oriyomi Onanuga in January 2025. Similarly, the Isa/Sabon Birni seat in Sokoto State was left vacant after the demise of Abdulkadir Jelani Danbuga in October 2023, while the Garki/Babura seat in Jigawa State became vacant following the death of Isa Dogonyaro in May 2024.

Meanwhile, the Oredo Federal Constituency in Edo State became vacant after its former representative, Dennis Idahosa, assumed office as the Deputy Governor of the state.
