President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is currently presiding over a Council of State meeting at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
The meeting has in attendance former Heads of State Ibrahim Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar, who joined virtually, alongside Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State.
However, according to Daily Trust, former Head of State Yakubu Gowon and former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan were notably absent as the session went into a closed-door discussion.
This marks the second Council of State meeting presided over by President Tinubu, the first having been held in August 2024.
The Council of State meeting is expected to include all surviving former Presidents and Heads of State, the Vice President, both serving and retired Chief Justices of Nigeria, George Akume (Secretary to the Government of the Federation), serving State Governors, the Chief of Staff to the President, and other top government officials.
Also present is Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
Among the Governors physically present at the session are those of Kwara, Rivers, Enugu, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Borno, Ogun, Sokoto, Edo, Kaduna, and Abia States.
The Council is expected to deliberate on major national concerns, particularly insecurity affecting various regions of the country, as well as early preparations for the 2027 general elections.
In addition, reports indicate that President Tinubu may use the meeting to finalize the appointment of a new Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, following the resignation of Mahmood Yakubu on Tuesday.
