BREAKING: Nigerian government increases passport fee N100k, 200k

The Federal Government has approved an upward review of the cost of obtaining Nigerian passports, with the new rates scheduled to take effect from September 1, 2025.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) announced the adjustment in a statement issued on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

New Passport Fees in Nigeria

Under the revised structure, the 32-page passport booklet with five-year validity will now cost ₦100,000, while the 64-page passport with 10-year validity has been pegged at ₦200,000.

According to the NIS, the changes affect only applications made within Nigeria.

“The review, which only affects Passport Application fees made in Nigeria, now sets a new fee threshold of ₦100,000 for the 32-page, five-year validity passport, and ₦200,000 for the 64-page, 10-year validity passport,” the statement read.

Fees for the Diaspora Unchanged

Passport application charges for Nigerians abroad remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page, five-year booklet and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year booklet.

Justification for the Increase

The Immigration Service explained that the review was necessary to maintain the quality and security features of the Nigerian passport, while also ensuring continued accessibility for citizens.

This marks the second increment in two years.

In August 2024, the government raised the cost of the 32-page, five-year passport from ₦35,000 to ₦50,000, and the 64-page, 10-year booklet from ₦70,000 to ₦100,000.

With the latest adjustment, the fees have effectively doubled within 12 months.
