The Federal Government of Nigeria has apprehended Nnamdi Kanu, the acclaimed leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) who has been on the run since jumping bail.
The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami announced this on Tuesday the 29th June 2021 in Abuja.
The Minister confirmed that the arrest is a result of a collaborative effort between the Nigerian Government and Interpol.
The IPOB Leader is now being arraigned at the Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of treasonable felony, terrorism and illegal possession of firearms among others after jumping bail in 2017.
Nnamdi Kanu has been on self-exile after the Federal Government declared him wanted on charges of treasonable felony. The Federal Government proscribed the activities of IPOB after the Southeast Governors outlawed the separatist group.
The secessionist crusader and activist escaped overseas after the Nigerian army invaded his residence in Afara-Ukwu near Umuahia, Abia State, during the military’s ‘Operation Python Dance II’ which was established to neutralize the secessionist agitation of the IPOB.
