King Salman, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, has appointed Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Humaid as Saudi Arabia’s new Grand Mufti and Head of the Senior Council of Scholars, following the death of Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah al-Sheikh, who served as the kingdom’s top religious authority for over 25 years. Al-Sheikh passed away on Tuesday in his 80s.
The announcement was shared by Inside the Harmain on its Facebook page on September 24, 2025.
Born in 1949, Sheikh Humaid is one of the nine Imams of the Grand Mosque of Mecca and has been a member of the Saudi Assembly since 1993. He served as Speaker of the Majlis al Shura from 2002 to 2009 and briefly as President of Religious Affairs of the Two Holy Mosques from 2001 to 2002. Known for his insightful quotes, Humaid led Eid prayers annually until 2025, when Sheikh Abdul-Rahman Al-Sudais took over.
