The Senate has confirmed Major General Waidi Shaibu as Nigeria’s new Chief of Army Staff, directing him to “take a bow” and immediately assume office.
The confirmation, which took place on Wednesday at the National Assembly in Abuja, followed shortly after the Senate approved General Olufemi Oluyede as Chief of Defence Staff — marking the start of the screening process for President Bola Tinubu’s newly appointed service chiefs.

The session, presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, was conducted under tight security and included both open and closed-door deliberations. Akpabio emphasized that the exercise fulfilled the Senate’s constitutional duty to ensure that only the most capable and patriotic officers are entrusted with Nigeria’s security.
“There’s no need to ask too many questions; we’ll continue discussions in a closed-door session,” Akpabio noted.

Senator Isah Jubrin (Kogi East) expressed strong confidence in Shaibu’s abilities, describing him as a disciplined, humble, and dedicated officer. “I have known him for 30 years. He’s serious-minded and has what it takes to help Nigeria overcome its current security challenges,” Jubrin said.
The swift screening and confirmation of Shaibu and Oluyede demonstrate the Senate’s resolve to fast-track the approval of all service chiefs appointed by President Tinubu as part of efforts to reinforce the nation’s defence structure.
The reshuffle in the military hierarchy comes amid heightened political tension following reports of an alleged coup plot against President Tinubu — claims the Presidency and Defence Headquarters have firmly denied.
