The Senate has confirmed Professor Joash Amupitan as the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) following a thorough screening on Thursday. During the session, Amupitan, a law professor, addressed senators’ questions on elections, administration, policy, and the Electoral Act.
The confirmation follows President Bola Tinubu’s request on Tuesday for the Senate to approve Amupitan’s appointment, succeeding Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure expired.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio read Tinubu’s letter during plenary. Amupitan is expected to take the oath of office, to be administered by the President, to officially assume his role.
