#BREAKING: Senator Neda Imasuen Dumps Labour Party, Joins APC

In a significant political development, Senator Neda Imasuen, who represents Edo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly and chairs the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, has officially defected from the Labour Party (LP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The defection, announced on the floor of the Senate earlier today, is seen as a major gain for the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections and a blow to the Labour Party, which has continued to face internal wrangling and weakening political cohesion across several states.

Senator Imasuen, a first-time lawmaker and prominent voice in Edo State politics, cited “the need for alignment with a national movement that can truly deliver sustainable governance” as part of his reasons for joining the APC. While addressing the press after the announcement, he emphasized the importance of legislative stability, saying:

> “I joined the APC not for personal gain, but to ensure that my people in Edo South benefit from being in sync with the centre. The time has come to move beyond slogans and work towards real development.”

Political observers note that Imasuen’s defection could significantly alter the political balance in Edo State, especially as the 2024 governorship election draws closer. His departure from LP may influence the structure and alliances in the state’s Labour Party, which has recently suffered leadership tussles and credibility concerns.

A senior APC source confirmed that Imasuen will be formally received by party leaders in Edo in a welcome rally scheduled for early May, further consolidating the APC’s presence in the state ahead of the next election cycle.

As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges, Imasuen has been at the forefront of several high-profile investigations, gaining a reputation for integrity and due process. His switch to the APC places the ruling party in control of more strategic committee leadership positions in the Senate.

The defection marks a growing trend of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu continues to strengthen his party’s base across geopolitical zones.
