BREAKING: Several Feared Trapped as Two-Storey Building Collapses in Lagos

Several people are feared trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the early hours of Monday in Lagos.

The incident was confirmed in a situation report released by the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye.

According to the report, the collapsed structure is located at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop in the Oyingbo area of Lagos.

Adeseye said a rescue team from the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station was promptly dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at about 12:20 a.m.

The agency noted that the building, which had previously been marked as structurally distressed, collapsed while residents were still inside.

“It is an ongoing rescue operation involving a two-storey building previously identified as distressed before it gave way on its occupants,” the statement read.

As of the time of filing this report, rescue operations were still underway.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Nigeria, particularly in Lagos, often linked to poor regulation enforcement, substandard construction materials, and insufficient oversight.

In one of the city’s most notorious cases, a high-rise luxury apartment under construction in Ikoyi collapsed in November 2021, killing at least 42 people after developers reportedly exceeded the approved number of floors.

More recently, in September 2025, a four-storey building under construction in the Yaba district also collapsed, leaving multiple casualties and several others trapped.
