BREAKING: Tinubu Approves Creation of New Federal University in Lagos

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, in Lagos State.

The announcement was made by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during plenary on Thursday, November 6, 2025.

Akpabio confirmed that the President has signed the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe Establishment Bill 2025 into law.

“It is my honour to announce that the Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe Establishment Bill 2025 has been assented to by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” Akpabio said.

He congratulated the people of Epe and Lagos State, noting that the university’s establishment marks another step in expanding access to quality education.

Akpabio also thanked the President for “opening the doors of education nationwide,” reaffirming Tinubu’s commitment to advancing specialized higher learning across Nigeria.

The bill was sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Deputy Majority Leader Oyelola Ashiru.

Nigeria currently has about 72 federal universities, 42 federal polytechnics, and 28 colleges of education, alongside numerous state and private institutions.

Despite a federal moratorium announced in August on creating new tertiary institutions due to limited resources and declining standards, the government proceeded with this approval to strengthen science and technology education.
