Breaking: Tinubu Government Clarifies: Maryam Sanda, 81 Others Awaiting Clemency Review

The Federal Government, under President Bola Tinubu, has clarified that Maryam Sanda and 81 other inmates approved for presidential clemency have not been released, as the process is under final administrative review. Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who chaired the clemency committee, stated on Thursday that the process involves verifying compliance with legal requirements before release instruments are issued.

Fagbemi emphasized that the verification, mandated by Section 175 of the 1999 Constitution, ensures transparency and fairness, with no delays. The clemency, approved by the Council of State last week, includes 175 inmates, with 145 from custodial centers, convicted for offenses like murder and drug trafficking.

Public outrage followed the announcement, with critics, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress’s Bolaji Abdullahi, arguing that pardoning high-profile convicts undermines justice and encourages criminality. Fagbemi welcomed public scrutiny, noting it strengthens governance, and assured that updates will follow once checks are completed.
